The Origins of Long‐Term Variability in Martian Upper Atmospheric Densities

چکیده
We quantify and interpret the long-term variability of dayside Martian upper thermosphere lower exosphere densities within 180–275 km altitudes. Atmospheric CO2, N2, O, Ar are from NASA Mars Atmosphere Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) observations during time period 2015–2020 near solar minimum. These neutral measurements, together with contemporaneous irradiance measurements at Mars, enable disentanglement orbital effect (due to annual Sun-Mars distance change longitude) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) in atmospheric density variations. The relative importance these two effects, which is obtained using a statistical method Dominance Analysis, reveals competition between indirect infrared (via upward coupling middle atmosphere) direct EUV local heating). Our results show that, unlike relatively constant low altitudes then decreases increasing altitude, nearly monotonically increases. effects comparable high (about 240/270/205 for CO2/N2/O). Effect of Atmospheric Dust on Interannual Variability in the Martian
Mars Observer Camera (MOC) observations from Mars Global surveyor (MGS) revealed that the Residual South Polar Cap (RSPC) consists of several units that show evidence of deposition and erosion with characteristic times on the order of ~ 100 years [1]. These authors suggested that significant changes observed in the RSPC between MY 9, when Mariner 9 observed the cap,, and MY 12, observed by Viki...
متن کاملPrincipal modes of variability of Martian atmospheric surface pressure
[1] An analysis of daily-to-interannual variability in the surface pressure field of the Martian nothern hemisphere as given by a Martian climate model is presented. In an empirical orthogonal function (EOF) decomposition, the dominant first two modes of variability comprise a zonal wavenumber 1 feature centered at 70 N latitude moving eastward with a period of 6 to 8 sols. This feature is a ba...
متن کاملThe Martian Atmospheric Boundary Layer
[1] The planetary boundary layer (PBL) represents the part of the atmosphere that is strongly influenced by the presence of the underlying surface and mediates the key interactions between the atmosphere and the surface. On Mars, this represents the lowest 10 km of the atmosphere during the daytime. This portion of the atmosphere is extremely important, both scientifically and operationally, be...

φn = P'(Krn)/σ79, (3) where P'(Krn) = 2.33 Â P(Krn) and has the dimension neutrons cms. The resonance integral σ79 is 110 Â cm [3]. Fig. 1 demonstrates the resulting neutron fluxes. They are shown in relation to the fluxes of > 5 MeV neutrons that were calculated based on cosmogenic Ne [8]. Two scenarios are possible how the meteoritic material might have experienced the observed neutron fluxes...
